The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a system used by ships and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) principally for identification and locating vessels. The primarily purpose of AIS is collision avoidance. AIS provides a means for ships to automatically exchange data like identification, position, course, and speed, with other nearby ships and VTS stations. This information can be displayed on either ECS or lap-top. AIS is intended to assist the vessel's watch standing officers and allow maritime authorities to track and monitor vessel movements. The International Maritime Organization's (IMO) International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) requires Class A AIS devices to be fitted aboard international voyaging ships with gross tonnage over 300, and all passenger ships regardless of size. As for non-SOLAS and other recreational vessels, a simple, compact, and cost-effective Class B AIS is recommended. Class B AIS has full compatibilities with Class A AIS and retains the major functions of collision avoidance and improving situation awareness.
